Fitting Exercise Into a Busy Schedule
Practical, flexible ways to add movement to a busy week, with safety reminders for getting started.
Start with the time you have
A long workout is not the only way to be active. A brisk walk before work, a short mobility routine at lunch, or a few flights of stairs can help you build a habit. Choose an amount of movement that fits your current schedule and health needs, then add time gradually.
- Put a 10- to 15-minute walk on your calendar and treat it like an appointment.
- Keep comfortable walking shoes where you are most likely to use them.
- Break a longer session into smaller blocks when one uninterrupted workout is difficult.
- Choose activities you enjoy so the routine is easier to repeat.
Build a balanced weekly routine
For many adults, public-health guidance recommends working toward at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening activity on two days. You do not have to reach that goal immediately. Consistency and gradual progress matter more than doing too much at once.
- Combine walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, or another activity that raises your breathing rate.
- Add simple strengthening movements such as squats, wall push-ups, or resistance-band exercises when appropriate.
- Schedule easier days and rest when your body needs recovery.
Make movement safer
Warm up with easy movement, drink water, and pay attention to how you feel. New pain, swelling, or a change in your ability to use a joint is a reason to pause and get advice rather than pushing through.
If you have a chronic condition, are pregnant, or have been inactive for a long time, ask a qualified clinician what type and amount of activity is appropriate for you.
- Stop exercising and seek urgent help for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or sudden weakness.
- For a new minor injury or concern that needs prompt evaluation, call a Downriver Clinics location to ask about walk-in care.
