Fight the Flu With 5 Easy Steps
Five practical ways to reduce the spread of seasonal flu and know when to seek medical care.
1. Ask about seasonal flu vaccination
Seasonal flu vaccination is an important way to reduce the risk of flu and serious complications. Recommendations and vaccine availability can change, so ask your clinician or local clinic what is appropriate for you and your family.
2. Wash your hands regularly
Wash with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, using the restroom, or returning home. When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
3. Cover coughs and improve airflow
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow, dispose of tissues, and clean frequently touched surfaces. When possible, improve indoor airflow and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
4. Stay home when you are sick
Rest, drink fluids, and avoid close contact with others while you are ill. Follow current public-health guidance about returning to work, school, and other activities, especially if you have a fever or worsening symptoms.
5. Know when to call
Call a Downriver Clinics location if you have flu-like symptoms and need guidance about an evaluation or available services. Seek emergency care immediately for trouble breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to wake or stay awake, severe dehydration, or symptoms that improve and then suddenly worsen.
- Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.
- Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with certain chronic conditions can be at higher risk of complications and may need prompt medical advice.
